MUSCATINE, Iowa - R. Gregory Orr, 59, of Muscatine, died on Monday, September 12, 2011, at his home.

Celebration of Life Service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, September 16, 2011, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 400 Iowa Avenue. The Reverend Bartholomew Ryan formerly of Trinity Episcopal Church and Dr. Bruce Ursin of Wesley United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in care of Muscatine Youth Shooting Club, Iowa City Hospice, Domestic Violence Shelter of Muscatine, or to the family in care of Arydth Orr.

Greg was born on November 27, 1951, in Cambridge, Ohio, the son of Robert J. and Verna Sue Johnson Orr. He was a graduate of Muscatine High School, class of 1969.

He married Ardyth Hagge on February 13, 1993, in Durant.

He worked for the Muscatine Police Department from 1974 to 1979, and the Muscatine Sheriff's office from 1980 until 2009. He served as Muscatine County Sheriff from 2001 until 2009.

He was a member of the Muscatine Moose Lodge No. 388, Iowa State Sheriff and Deputy Association, and was a lifelong member of the NRA. He also was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He enjoyed shooting and golf.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Ardyth Orr of Muscatine; three sons, Jacob 'Chopper' Orr and wife, Mackinsey, of Muscatine, Robert Dean Orr of Wilton, and Michael Hoppe of Muscatine; one daughter, Elizabeth Anne Orr of Durant; one grandson; his mother, Sue Wagstaff and husband, Raymond, of Cambridge, Ohio; one brother, Rickie Lee Orr and wife, Linda, of Fort Meyers, Florida; one sister, Jacqueline Sue Compton and husband, William, of Fort Meyers, Florida; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Mike
